William Ebsworth Hill entered the family business of violin making when he was only 14 years old. After his father’s death, he completed his studies under Charles Harris. In 1880 he founded his own shop, William E. Hill & Sons, which received international renown for several generations for its restoration work and bow making. It was one of the foremost shops of the 20th century and its legacy continues today through their fine instruments and publications on the Stradivari and Guarneri families.
