Tips for a Successful Shopping Appointment
Bring your own instrument and bow to compare to your new options. This will help you easily tell the differences between your new instrument/bow and your old one. Changing one variable in your set-up also allows for an easier trial - it is better to try new instruments with your current bow that you are accustomed to, as opposed to trying new instruments with new bows.
Bring music that you are comfortable playing. You will get a better idea of an instrument’s sound while playing a piece you have spent time on, not a piece that you are still learning.
What should you play? When trying a new instrument, play a piece that you are comfortable playing, and make sure to play in all of the registers you would normally use. Play each string and use different dynamics. When trying a new bow, try many different bow strokes: legato, staccato, spiccato, etc.
Bring your teacher, if they are available. We love meeting your teachers! Your teacher will have helpful insight regarding your upgrade and will almost always want to hear your new instrument options before you make a purchase.
