Born in Germany in 1836 as Louis Löwenthal, Lowendall later changed the spelling of his name to when trading to an international audience. As a child he was a talented violinist and cellist. He opened his own business in 1855 and soon developed a reputation as a skilled dealer and connoisseur of new and antique instruments. He employed several talented makers at his firm, allowing him to produce thousands of instruments over the half a century he was in business. The firm created several models of student to professional level violins, mainly in the style of Stradivari.
