Jean-Francois was original from Mirecourt and third in a line of violin makers. He moved to Paris in 1785 where he stayed for the next 60 or so years. He was among the first French makers to acquire Italian instruments from Luigi Tarisio, a famous instrument collector. His violins and cellos are interpretations of Stradivari, with fuller archings and red-brown varnish.
